MAKING A DONATION

Beaufort Republican Women’s Club members Kim Handy, Jane Culley and Jean Sulc present a donation check of $200 on April 16 to Reverend Kenneth Hodges of the Tabernacle Baptist Church toward the construction of the Harriet Tubman Monument. The monument is to honor Tubman’s services in Beaufort during the Civil War and for her role in the Combahee River Raid that freed more than 750 slaves in 1863. Before the Civil War, Harriet Tubman personally led 70 enslaved people to freedom via the Underground Railroad. In her later years, she toured parts of the northeast speaking on behalf of the women’s suffrage movement and worked with noted suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony.
